America 250: On View at the Grace Museum January 17, 2026 – November 28, 2026

The year 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in the United States. To mark this momentous anniversary, The Grace Museum is celebrating America’s semi quincentennial through a yearlong history exhibition highlighting our journey through the last 250 years.
Visitors to the museum’s third floor can explore our country’s shared history through a sequence of documented stories and artifacts in “America 250.” The exhibition reflects on our past and honors the contributions of all Americans. It emphasizes the narratives of those who lived here long before the founding of our country and of those who have weaved into the cultural fabric of our lives today. Visitors will learn how the history of our region fits into the context of America’s larger story. People currently living in Abilene and our neighboring communities also share their experiences as a poignant reminder that our collective journey is still unfolding.
To enhance the exhibition on view, The Grace also created opportunities throughout the year to help visitors connect to specific historic events and themes. Earlier this year, they held a free Texas Independence Day Dance that included a live band playing Texas country favorites and guests two-stepping to their hearts’ content. In April, the community was also invited to the museum for a special 1776 Spring Festival. Families were transported back in time and participated in a variety of activities that included traditional candle dipping, tin punch art, decorating buffalo hides and handheld fans, a colonial star project, seed planting and a spinning wheel demonstration. Several downtown partners joined in the fun to help with these activities: Abilene Public Library, Abilene Farmers Market, Abilene Yarn Co., Center for Contemporary Arts and Spark Science Center.
But don’t worry – you haven’t missed all the “America 250” celebrations. On select Thursday nights throughout the year, The Grace will host free pop-up activities in the galleries that relate to different moments and events in our country’s history. Each pop-up will provide insight into what was happening in Abilene during the same time period and will include a handout with more information to take home. Visitors on these nights will be able to participate in a scavenger hunt, create a WWII victory garden from recycled materials and enjoy crafts related to historic figures such as Harriet Tubman and significant events like 9/11.
On July 2, The Grace will host a free Trivia Night in the courtyard. Individuals and groups can test their knowledge about the history of the United States and win prizes! If movies are more your speed, come out to the museum on July 9 for a special screening under the stars of “National Treasure” on The Grace Rooftop. Bring your own snacks, sit back and enjoy this fun tribute to our country’s forefathers.
