Petite Chic

Whether you have girls or boys,  you want to create a space that fits their personality, adapts to your home and is a place where they are happy, content and hopefully sleeping all night!  Gone are the days of superheroes and princesses. Now it’s “petite chic”- luxurious fabrics, soothing colors and pieces that create history and make their room the envy of all of their pint-sized friends. Whether you are decorating a nursery for your first or updating to a big girl or boy room, we’ve put together some fun and creative rooms to provide inspiration. You’ll see how details can make the whole room become a unique place just for your child.  The rooms we’ve shared offer ways to keep their space cheerful, distinctive and organized.  The colors range from simple and sweet to fun and eclectic. However bright and bold or soft and subtle you choose to go, creating a space just for your little one is a priceless experience.  Most likely, whatever you do they will love because you created it just for them.

Claire’s “Sugar and Spice”

“When I was pregnant with Claire, I loved the traditional little girl colors–pink, pale green and yellow.  We used these colors in her nursery and now in her “big” girl room, “ says her mom.

Color: Benjamin Moore Hancock Green

Bedding: Dena Home–Dillard’s and Pottery Barn

Something Special: Claire has a collection of Madame Alexander dolls that are in addition to her mom’s collection.  Claire’s great grandfather worked for a major department store in Dallas and worked with Effanbee Doll Company.  Through his career he became friends with Madame Alexander.  Claire’s room is now home to a sweet Madame Alexander Doll given to her by her great grandmother and grandfather.

Best Find: Claire’s nightstand that I found at Stokes’s Chic Antiques-we saw it in the window and had to have it!

Claire’s favorite:  I love my bed!!!  I also love my little table and my tea set–it was my mommy’s.  And, flowers!

Added touch:  The ballerina picture over Claire’s bed is a photograph of her when she was two years old.

Fynn’s  Flying Fun

“We wanted a vintage aviation look for Fynn’s room. After all, I am a pilot in the Navy Reserves and my husband is a Weapons System Officer in the Air Force.  We also wanted his room to be a calm place where he could rest, so we kept it simple,” says Fynn’s mom Whitney.

Color:  Valspar Cincinnati Hotel Linder Blue

Bedding:  Pottery Barn

Something Special:  We found his bed and night stand at a local craft fair when we were stationed in Pensacola, Florida. Made by Cottage Collage, not only was it a steal, but it was made from reclaimed wood from an old boardwalk that had been destroyed when hurricane Ivan hit the Gulf Coast in 2004.  The Gulf Coast really has a place in our hearts and it’s nice to carry a piece around with us (literally) wherever the military brings us!

Fynn’s favorite:  His “treasure” chest

Added touch:  the wooden “airplane” ride along, a surprise gift from friends, and a few U.S. Naval Academy football posters (mom’s alma mater)

Rockin’ Baby

“Our room was originally planned for a boy.  It was a nod to rock and roll because my husband’s brother, an avid musician, had just passed away–I found out I was pregnant the day before the funeral.  We had planned to name our baby after him. However, he was a she–Genevieve Aaron-Jae–so the room must be “pinkified,” says mom Michelle.

Color:  Light gray on top with a chalk board gray on bottom, with a yellow striped ceiling.

Something special:  We added lots of “rock” posters to the room.  We didn’t want it to be to babyish.  The boom box decal and the counting bird poster added inspiration for colors to add.  When Genevieve arrived, we had to incorporate some pink into our plan, hence the picture, lamp, pillow…

Something DIY:  The dresser is a 1950’s – I sanded down and painted the sides yellow and the drawers white and restained the rest.

Added touch:  My husband’s brother, who passed away just before I found out I was pregnant, was an amazing musician and that is what inspired the décor.  Nods to him can be found throughout the room.

Jett’s Nursery – Modern Meets Vintage

“My style is more vintage and shabby and my husband’s style is more modern so I wanted his nursery to be a combination of both of our styles.” Jett’s mom, Aubrey

Colors: grey, turquoise and green

Bedding:  The Land of Nod

Something Special:  The rocker and ottoman were my husband’s grandmothers and we had them recovered in the blue hounds-tooth fabric. The dresser and crib were family heirlooms that my husband sanded and painted and put a varnish on to give them a vintage look.

Added Touch:  The quilt has a modern design, and was the perfect piece to combine my love for vintage and the modern edge that my husband likes.

Let’s Play – LOL!

“I wanted the room to have a young and playful feel but to still flow with the décor in the rest of our home which is why I went with the softer color palette.”  Ava and Jett’s mom, Aubrey

Colors:  Soft yellow, red, green and robin’s egg blue

Inspiration: Laughter and Fun!  The “LOL” sign encourages lots of “laughing out loud”.

Something Special:  The bookcase was made by Aubrey’s grandfather before she went to college.

Added Touch:  The unique piece of art above the easel was made by our 11-year-old cousin.

DIY Projects:  Dad made the dress-up stand and a repurposed dresser serves as home for storing games, puzzles, art supplies, media, etc.

Hannah’s Heaven

The inspiration of the room was all the beautiful rooms my mother decorated for me as a child–it always made me feel special . I wanted a relaxing room and I believe the soft colors of light pink, off white, and soft lighting make the room very enjoyable!”  Hannah’s mom, Melissa

Color:  Romance

Bedding:  Custom Design– soft pink toile and soft cream chenille fabric

Favorite Part:  My favorite part of the room is the rocking chair and soft rose lamp on the nightstand. My husband and I enjoy reading and rocking our daughter to sleep.

Something Special: A beautiful chandelier, installed by her dad.

Added Touch:  The hand-painted shelf, letter “H” and picture frame that match the room.  Precious pink knobs on the changing table and night stand add to the “girly “feel of the room.
