Abilene concert goers… It’s time to step up.

It is becoming apparent that Abilene has a growing musical culture! From the Men Behind the Music to Open Mike Nights at Monks, and everything in between, if your heart is in it you can find a musical event to fit your needs.

I’d like to take the opportunity to point out that with three Universities in town, there should be no shortage of entertainment opportunities.

BONUS. They are a great place to look for events! If you are a student, an alumnae or even if you just live in Abilene, likely you should be able to find shows with young or up-and-coming bands that you can attend for a small fee (maybe even for free)!

Mid-August is an especially good time to keep an eye out for these events as universities welcome new students for the fall.  Last year for their new student orientation week, HSU hosted Casey Donahew.  The outdoor show hosted on their lawn was even open to the public!

This year they hosted one of my favs, Colony House.  This year the concert was free to students, alumni and staff! My strongest connection is with HSU but I know that ACU also plans concerts throughout the year.  I once saw that early 2000’s hit band Switchfoot in Moody Coliseum.  This year they hosted Eric Hutchinson for welcome week!

Admittedly, if you expect Abilene to host performers like T-Swift or Beyoncé at the peak of their careers, you are going to be disappointed.  We simply don’t have the venues.  But the performers that grace our fair city are equally as talented and compelling if you take the time to care.  And many are either on their way to the top, or are touring with their well-loved vintage classics.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  There are no excuses to be bored in Abilene.  Creativity in planning your evenings of entertainment can be part of the fun if you let it.

P.S.  You WILL be sorry you missed Colony House while they were in town.  They are definitely going places.

P.P.S.  Photographic evidence that I kept it (somewhat) cool while I was fangirling on the inside.
