Have you been to the Dachshund Races?

Have you been to the Dachshund Races?

I have.

It’s been one of Abilene’s Events that I’ve been trying to make it to for years! This year my whole family made it out to raced our little sausage dog Link.

Obviously he’s built for speed.  Look how focused he is.

We got there just in time to see the end of the costume contest before the real races started.

They gave away prizes like candy at Halloween! All the little furry friends loved having so many chances to shine and opportunities to win! They gave prizes to the Smallest Dog, Tallest Dog, Fat Dog of the Year, Youngest Dog, Oldest Dog, Owner and Dog Look-a-Like Couple of the Year, Best Costume, Mr. and Miss Congeniality, Homecoming King, and Homecoming Queen.   I had my money on one little chunk of love named Pumpkin for fat dog of the year, but she looked the beacon of fitness next to this year’s winner.

Overall, there were plenty of cuties in creative costumes, but this little guy was my favorite.

Go get ‘em Cowboy.

We stayed to watch our skinny little black hot dog run in his heat.  Apparently he didn’t realize it was a race, but at least he made it to the finish line which is more than most can say.

This event was plenty of fun and lots of laughs.  It was one of my favorite #EventsToBeScene so far! And the best part is, the proceeds go to benefit the SPCA of West Texas helping animals find loving homes in the Big Country.

I don’t recommend going to visit the animals unless you are prepared to be tempted to take someone home, but that new PokemonGo thing that’s taking over the internet might just be a great way to volunteer and give some lonely animals a little attention in the process.  If walking/catching Pokemon isn’t your thing I’m sure the SPCA of West Texas would always appreciate donations for food and veterinary bills to help them provide for their rescues.  Find out how you can help online.
