I Survived Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

March 7, 2016 Leave a Comment

It’s a little challenging. A little intimidating.  Taking the first step out of your comfort zone.

I imagine that every time someone tries something new, it’s a little tiny glimpse into the emotional state of Neil Armstrong when he became the first man to step foot on the moon.  So, last Thursday my friend Cody Bates and I tested our limits and stepped out of our comfort zone into a whole new world… of dancing in heels.

It’s a growing trend to take hip-hop dance classes in high heels. Stars like Beyoncé and their backup dancers have been doing it for years, and many a YouTube video is available for your viewing pleasure if you want to take a look at just what that means (search “heels dance”).  Dancing has been a part of my life for many years now but I will have to say I hadn’t yet taken the leap into heels.  I don’t know if it’s the height that’s intimidated me, or the ease with which I tweak my ankles simply walking in high heeled shoes, but something was holding me back.

The Mill was a perfect place to try something that’s just a little bit new.  Cody and I went for sangrias right away to loosen us up.  Only one each, of course, because we weren’t trying to hurt ourselves.   Sipping them slowly over the course of the two-hour class helped us take that first high-heeled step out and be confident enough to commit to the choreography.

The choreographer and instructor Kirby Wilkerson really had us sweating.  We stretched, strutted across the floor, and learned this sassy sultry combination (a short dance routine).

Kirby, Christian Zehr and Evan Anderson totally killed it.

Cody and I had a blast but it’s easy to see that this may not be for everybody.  That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider some of the other Wednesday night dance classes The Mill is offering. The line-up includes waltzing and salsa dancing lessons, so check it out.

I’m forever on the hunt for unique and exciting activities in Abilene!  If you have an activity or event that you think I should know about, let me know with the hashtag #EventsToBeScene.
