October. The month that welcomes fall weather, costumes and candy. Abilene does not fail to deliver when it comes to Halloween and Fall celebrations. Our list of community events for this month is far from comprehensive but we’ve highlighted a few of our favorites and linked to a larger collection of Community Calendars.

DRI Pumpkin Patch:
Thousands of fresh pumpkins and gourds in all sizes and prices. Decorated areas for taking pictures at no charge as well as free hayrides. Proceeds from sales go directly to the care of the DRI folks. DRI is a nonprofit agency that provides residential care, vocational training and recreational activities to adults with intellectual disabilities. Free admission. Pumpkins range from $0.50 – $50.00.

Part kitsch, part dish, all apron. Join us for an evening of fifties flair with The Casserole Queens, Sandy Pollock and Crystal Cook. Lisa and Tom Perini will emcee and reminisce about the Abilene dining experience in the 1950s. Featured Casserole Queen recipes that guests will enjoy include: beef tenderloin canapé, cucumber canapé, pretty prosciutto and pimento cheese bites, and pineapple upside down cake. Guests can also enjoy French 75 cocktails.

Weather permitting, the Philharmonic’s concert in the civic center will be live streamed onto the lawn for festival-goers.

Auditions for “It’s A Wonderful Life – A Live Radio Show” – This beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. With the help of an ensemble that brings a few dozen characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve.
Director Mike Stephens is looking for: Two men age 40 to 60; two or three women age 20 – 60; three to five men age 20-50; one man, non-speaking role age 20 – 30.
