We all know the classic story of Peter Pan, but do we all know the story of how he came to be?
In a unique and beautifully creative production, ACU Theatre has told a particularly pleasing prequel story in the musical “Peter and the Starcatcher.”
I’ve been meaning to see an ACU Theatre production for ages, and I was absolutely not disappointed. In fact, I am angry at myself for not experiencing this local treasure sooner! I was missing out, and you probably are too. Unfortunately, with the close of this show you will have to wait until the fall for further ACU Theatre entertainment. I believe the wait will be worth it.
Check it out! I’ve already blocked off this weekend to see this show:
October 20-22, 2017
The 2017 Homecoming Musical: CATS. The College Production. Music by Andrew Lloyd Weber.
Abilene Civic Center | Tickets on sale online only at acu.edu/theatre
But back to Peter.
This cast was so incredibly energetic and engaging I watched with rapt attention, fully absorbing every single second. Never was there a dull moment. The cast executed the entire show with perfect timing, setting and resetting, moving like a well-oiled machine. The whole show felt like one cohesive dance routine with all the pieces weaving in and out with boundless youthful energy. I can’t wait to come back and see this program, and these students, execute future shows with similar gusto. I hope to see you there as well. You won’t be disappointed.
My personal favorite character was the ‘lost boy’ named Ted. Performed by Ryan Derrick, Teddie made me smile the widest with his affinity for food and emotional connection to a particular pineapple. SO to Ryan for killing it.
If you are interested in the story of “Peter and the Starcatcher” you can read the novel series by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson (also, great via audiobook).
Because, let’s be honest, the story of Peter Pan never grows old.
