Are you looking for things to do in Abilene?
By Bailey LeRoux
If your recent quality time with your significant other involves a TV remote or household chores, February is the perfect excuse to mix it up and get out of the house together. At the very least, you can justify the sitter fee for that strange thing known to some as “Valentine’s Day.” Here are a few date night activities in Abilene for those of us who live and love in the Key City.
-
Try new food and drinks together.
Trying new things can be challenging, especially if you have a strong definition of what you like and don’t like. But taking on new adventures together — particularly in the relatively low-risk area of dining — can be a great bonding experience. Think new memories and conversation topics! Abilene Scene checked out some interesting and culturally diverse Abilene restaurants for you.
-
Eat a progressive dinner.
Still feel limited by the Abilene meal options? A creative way to mix up a date night dinner is to pick a different venue for each course of your meal. Appetizers at restaurant A, entrée at restaurant B, dessert and coffee at restaurant C. Pick and choose your favorite spots for each course and break up your meal as much or as little as you want!
-
Bed and Breakfast
An entire night away might be harder to swing, but if you can do it, there are plenty of nearby options. Buffalo Gap has a charming collection of Bed and Breakfasts, and there are even rental homes in town that, at a minimum, will get you away from your chores. See Buffalo Gap Bed and Breakfast, Elm Creek Bed and Breakfast, Fairy Tale Bed and Breakfast, and Sayles Ranch.
-
Thrift shopping
If you expand your date night into a whole weekend together, a great daytime option is to get some thrift shopping in. Buffalo Gap has a great flea market, and there are plenty of antique stores in Abilene. You don’t even have to buy things to have a good time; just make up stories together about the past lives of the old items as you browse.
-
Zoo and Picnic
Take a trip to Nelson Park for a wintry picnic followed by warming up with a brisk walk through the zoo! Don’t forget to pack your hot chocolate or coffee in a thermos to keep you warm.
-
The Skatin’ Place
Throwback to your younger days with some roller skates. It can be an ordeal getting the muscle memory back at first, but the activity will get your heart rate up and make you feel young together again.
-
Town and Country Drive In
Some people think of the drive-in movie as a summer activity, but a winter trip to the drive in can be just as fun. Pack plenty of blankets and pillows to keep away the cold and prepare to snuggle.
-
Paramount
The Paramount is always an Abilene classic, and you can’t beat the romance of drifting clouds and a starry night sky — with the bonus of comfy seats and indoor heating. Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th the Paramount is showing the 1942, Casablanca.
-
Bowling or Mini Golf
A little friendly competition can be great fun (if you can reign in any ultra-competitive instincts). Challenge each other and get moving in a way that doesn’t feel like work. Just like skating, these activities will elevate your heart rate just enough to make you feel those butterflies in your stomach again. Here are the Mini-Golf options in Abilene: Play Faire Park, Putt Putt, and Prime Time.
-
Take a walk
Abilene has plenty of parks around town that have safe trails, and you can even go for a full-on hike at the Abilene State Park. If the weather is bitter cold or its allergy season for you, try visiting one or two of Abilene’s art or history museums. Whether indoors or outdoors, talk about the things you see, admire the beauty around you, and above all, hold hands.
