Tradition, Tradition! 🎶🎻 Scene Sees Fiddler at the Paramount

July 10, 2017 Leave a Comment

The Paramount productions never cease to amaze me. I love that I live in a community of such talented people that support the arts and let creativity thrive. It does make me a little sad sometimes that these paramount productions only come around every so often.

I can’t get enough.

This was my first experience of the Fiddler performed live. I really wanted to see Cooper High School’s production at the beginning of the year but I had a commitment that I couldn’t miss.

Live is the only way to enjoy this show. It’s a long show, to be sure, but it is worth the time. I’ve seen the old 1971 movie version on a few occasions, but the characters never jumped out at me with such livelihood and vigor as they did at this live performance.

The nuances of the father-daughter relationships in this story about family and tradition escaped my notice previously. Maybe I’m just getting old.

I had also previously been functioning under the delusion that the story being told in this musical was dated. Don’t ask me why. I didn’t have any reasons for that conclusion. But watching this musical illustrate the tragic nuances of the “us-versus-them” mindset, give a brief look at the woes of the refugee experience and highlight the ups and downs of religious commitment it suddenly felt like this story could have been written today.

When Tevye disowns Chava for marrying Fyedka, man it got me in the feels.

Please don’t miss the next Paramount Production, August Osage County September 15-16 and 22-23. Auditions for this production are this coming week! Monday and Tuesday July 17th and 18th.
