Appetizingly Abilene: Summer Sips

July 1, 2013 Leave a Comment

You may think it’s impossible to cool off, but I beg to differ.  Rather than featuring one local eatery, I decided to share some great spots that have  “seasonal sips” that will no doubt provide at least temporary relief from this sweltering heat!

KonaFirst Sip: Kona Ice – a number one pick! You’ll find this ultra cool “snow cone” truck at the baseball field, schools, and many other popular spots–cups of fluffy ice drenched in yummy flavors such as wedding cake and tiger’s blood: the list goes on. Can’t decide on one, then you MUST tryout the most popular feature of the Kona Ice truck, the do-it-yourself flavor bar on the side. Don’t let summer pass without at least one of these chilly treats, hurry because it’s not as easy to find them when it starts cooling off.  Need a Kona Ice snow cone? See Kona Ice Abilene on Facebook for locations.

Cool Fact about Kona Ice!  Its super-wonderful owner believes in philanthropy, she has been known to give back a portion of proceeds to various organizations around town.  I love that!!!

Sip in the middle: How about a glass of Viognier, a lightly oaked white wine with notes of apples and apricots or Isn’t it Peachy, a crisp wine with scents of fresh peaches?   These are just a couple of the wines, with quirky names, that can be found at The Winery at Willow Creek.  This quaint newcomer to Abilene is quickly becoming a hot “chill” spotWine to relax and endure the West Texas heat. As their creative names infer, the wines are unique and must be sampled.  The tasting part is fun–let them guide you through the process, but then choose what your taste-buds prefer—it’s all good… No, great!   By the glass or bottle, take advantage of the relaxing ambiance; enjoy your “seasonal sip” with a plate of their wine nibbles while sitting creek-side in one of the cozy seating acres. You’re sure to escape the heat—even though it may only be temporary relief!

Cool Fact about The Winery!  This little spot is awesome for parties and private get-togethers, they offer a discount on cases of wine (mix and match).   Choose their nibbles or bring in your own and you are set!

Sweet_TeaLast Sip: What happens when you mix a summer favorite with a southern staple–Watermelon Sweet Tea!  Cattle Baron Cafe, known for its delicious “branded” burgers, has concocted this iconic treat.  I’ll have to admit, I am not an iced tea fan, in most instances I would just a soon have water.  But, this sweet, little sip is truly fabulous – it screams Texas Summer!  Served ice cold and topped with the Texas flag, of course!  You’ll be hooked.

Cool Fact:  Cattle Baron Café is relatively new to Abilene.  They offer daily specials and have a great little patio.  Their umbrella tables pay homage to our great state.
