Like I said in my March #EventsToBeScene Post, I grew up listening to The Beach Boys. I have vivid summer memories of driving in the car requesting the ‘best of’ CD we wore out with use. Maybe it has something to do with how much time growing up we spent in the sun and heat of the ocean side sands of Texas and Puerto Rico (our family’s second home). To this day nothing frequents my summer playlists quite as much as favorites like “Don’t Worry Baby” and “Surfer Girl.”
This concert is something I certainly did not want to miss. Sinus infection be damned! I wanted to see the Beach Boys. And to be honest John Stamos was a pretty big draw as well. (I mean come on…)
My mom’s father was an avid lover of barber shop music. He loved singing harmony until his dying day, and because of that, she’s a sucker for good tight harmony. I can’t be 100% sure, but I’m fairly certain the acapella piece “Their Hearts Were Full of Spring” that the Boys sang in memoriam of Nancy Reagan brought tears to her eyes for more than one reason.
The whole time I just couldn’t help but think that Abilene is lucky to have shows like these. So lucky. Also, how lucky is the world to have a rock and roll band like The Beach Boys? They’ve been killing it in the music industry for years and they still sound amazing.

Full disclosure: my mom’s name is Rhonda. And, I had a grand ole time watching all the Rhonda’s (my mom included) dance and sing along when The Boys played “Help Me, Rhonda.” At this concert we discovered our new favorite song: “Disney Girl.” This is one of the songs that slipped through the cracks of our season of Beach Boys fangirling, and it turned out to be my mom’s new favorite.
The song is about wanting to see the world through rose colored glasses. Which is something my mom and I have in common, we like to look at the world through the aforementioned pink lenses. For this evening seeing the world the way we wanted didn’t take all that much imagination. Thanks to The Beach Boys.
I am always looking for new and exciting community events. If there is an event you would like me to attend, or an event you would like to know more about, let me know via social media with the hashtag #EventsToBeScene.
