HSU Theater Does it Again: Godspell

April 10, 2017 Leave a Comment

“Prepare ye the way of the Lord.”

HSU theater does it again with the classic 1971 rock opera, Godspell.  Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.

If you haven’t had a chance to see this musical, it’s based on the gospel of Matthew and follows Jesus from his baptism to crucifixion, setting his teachings and parables to music.  The setting? New York City. Present Day.

Director Christopher Hollingsworth wishes the following for viewers in his notes, “so when you leave tonight, whether you are Christian or not, don’t forget how these teachings show us the importance of building a community through our diversity.”  This in my opinion perfectly sums up the show.

I have to take a moment to compliment the HSU Theater Department and all these talented students. The production was very well done and not a detail overlooked.  In fact, may favorite part was all the thoughtful details. The chorus of Jesus’ followers successfully functioned as one storytelling body with many unique (entertaining) and individual parts.  Details to costume, well timed unscripted asides, and hilarious reactions all worked together toward a unifying theme of community (shout out to the tourist with a selfie stick). Not to mention, the set was also beautiful.  Even the audience entrance looked like a graffitied subway tunnel that extended onto the stage, making the viewers feel participatory.

If you haven’t noticed I love the performing arts. Next up on my list is to see ACU’s production of “Peter and the Star Catcher.” I’m pretty jazzed.  Check it out.  Will I see you there?
