It’s Me! Bailey LeRoux
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Bailey LeRoux. I work with the team at Abilene Scene and from here on out I will be writing for the blog. I’m excited to start this new year with you guys and share my perspective on the “art, culture and goings-on” in Abilene TX.
A little bit about me. I live in the Key City with my husband (Michael) and two dogs (Dany the pug and Murphy the terrier). I work at Zachry Publications with the rest of the Scene team and I spend my free time working with the dance team at HSU and teaching dance lessons at Abilene Performing Arts Center. My husband and I just bought our first home and we are excited to be in such a great community.
I want to start the year out by saying that I would love to hear from you guys. We make this magazine for you and we want to know what you think about it. The same is true of this blog. I plan on writing about and attending a few community events each month. If you have an event you think I should know about, tweet it to @AbileneScene with the hashtag #EventsToBeScene.
In my humble opinion, Abilene is the place to be. If you are bored here, I hope you consider the fact that it might be because you haven’t given yourself the chance to truly experience what Abilene has to offer. It is true that Abilene has a personality that doesn’t appeal to everyone, but I personally think that is more of a testament to our strength as a community.
I find Abilene’s potential exciting and its community inviting. Hear me out.
Abilene is awesome point #1.
How great is it that we can get to the opposite side of town in 15 minutes? I thank my stars for this fact every day. I am a “grab-life by the horns” kind of girl. I want to try anything and everything as fast as I can. If I want to take a class at Sage Yoga, view an art exhibit at the Grace and test Wine at the Mill all after a full day’s work. I can do that in Abilene because of the fantastic commute time! Score.
Abilene is awesome point #2
Let’s be honest. Getting involved in your community is not always the easiest of tasks, but it can be one of the most rewarding. Abilene is flooded with opportunities to get involved. Arts groups, and boards of community enhancing organizations and the like. All you have to do is dive in. I can promise you there are plenty of opportunities to keep you preoccupied so long as you take the time to look. Because of this, the community of Abilene is extremely close knit. It’s true here as it is anywhere, it’s not what you know, it’s definitely who you know that counts. So get out there and get involved!
Abilene is awesome point #3
Absolutely creative and amazing arts events. If you haven’t kept up with the events around town, let me direct you to my little friend the Abilene Cultural Affairs Calendar. There’s an event nearly every night of the month and this calendar doesn’t miss much in the way of community activities. It’s certainly enough to keep you on your toes.
Abilene is awesome point #4
Abilene is changing and growing but it’s not losing its charm. Which anyone can tell you is a difficult feat when it comes to managing growing pains. The downtown revival that’s been happening with the opening of several exciting new businesses in the city center; it is incredible to witness. I believe we are up and coming, while at the same time embracing our roots and celebrating the essence of the Abilene community. I believe there is more in store for 2016 and I’m excited to be here to witness it.
Let’s be friends together and let’s love Abilene. Who’s with me!?
