Here in Abilene one of our most beloved attractions happens to be an old movie theater. It’s probably a reasonable assumption that as a community we love movies! So, from Abilene Scene to you, here are a few ways to maximize your summer movie experience.
Where to go:
If you are looking for a regular movie theater experience Abilene has three options available to you: Century 12 by Academy, Premiere Cinema in the Mall of Abilene, and the Carmike behind Olive Garden. These are sure to meet your everyday movie going needs with the biggest of summer hits. But if you are looking for something a little bit different or a little bit original, the Drive-In is an often overlooked option. And of course, one mustn’t forget the grand ole Paramount, complete with a throwback feature each month and reasonably priced snacks.
What to bring:
To the drive in: Lawn chairs and bug spray are a must for those summer blockbusters; in the winter stock up on blankets and pillows. It can also be very helpful to bring a portable battery powered radio, especially if you will be seated outside of your car for the extent of the movie.
To the theaters: Depending on your personal body temperature it might be a good idea to bring a sweater or a cardigan. Keeping everyone happy and comfortable in a packed movie theater can sometimes be a chilly business. But of course you want to be able to shed layers in case the temperature swings in the opposite direction.
It’s generally frowned upon to bring your own snacks to the movies, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring your own flavors! For a unique popcorn experience hold the butter and add your own mix-ins! Here are some great portable popcorn topping ideas.
Healthy & Savory No-Salt Options
Your MoviePass card. For those that frequent the movies this could be your new best friend. A monthly fee of $30 for one movie pass membership and you can see unlimited movies at all three of Abilene’s theaters. If you see more than 3 movies a month this card would more than pay for itself.
How to behave:
The pre-show commercials in the theater are always reminding you to keep your phone from distracting others, but sometimes audience members can be distracting even without a phone. As a courtesy to your fellow movie lovers try to avoid loud noises of any kind. Excessively loud laughing, talking or sobbing can make your neighbors very uncomfortable and distract from the movie experience. Think twice before bringing very small children, and if during the movie your child gets restless please be courteous and take them to the hallway until they have calmed down. That being said, if you feel the need to confront someone who is behaving poorly, do so with the utmost kindness and respect. Adding an argument to the noise is only more distracting for the rest of the theater. If the issue does not resolve itself smoothly contact a theater employee.
Theater Alternatives:
Not everyone loves a crowded room. If you aren’t in a hurry to see the biggest hits of the summer you can have plenty of summer movie fun with rentals. No need to worry about keeping kids still and quite, just relax! Charge up your laptop or portable DVD player and have a date watching the movie by the lake. Build a fort in your living room at home and watch your favorite movies from under the sheets for an added sense of adventure. Get creative and have some fun!
