Dining on a Dime and finding a cheap date in Abilene can be difficult. Scene has pulled together a few local tips and pointers to help you save your pennies and eat out at the same time. But what do you do about dates or special occasions?
Dates can easily rack up a larger than average bill. Appetizers, drinks and desserts generally aren’t included in your value meal deal, but depending on your personal style and preference, can add a good deal of interest to a special occasion. Still, there’s no reason to break the bank.
We’ve been trying for a while now and I think Michael and I have found a few things to help maximize your date night ROI.
Our first and favorite tip is to find meals and restaurants with drink deals. We like $2 margaritas. If you like a drink or two on your date, that concept alone is going to save you major bucks in the longer run. The local Salvadoran restaurant, Don Luis, serves $2 margaritas on certain nights of the week and Miguel’s does the same on Wednesdays. Almost every restaurant has some type of drink special that can help make date nights special while keeping the price tag low.
Our cheap dates also include queso because:
- this is Texas 2
- who doesn’t love queso?
- queso happens to be a very affordable appetizer.
Bonus points all around. We get our appetizer and our wallet stays happy. It’s a win-win-win.
Because we like to feel special by making an experience out of our date night meal, this is where we really cut costs:
We split an entrée.
With drinks and an appetizer beforehand, we are already too full to eat an entire entrée on our own. Plus, there is no way we are skipping dessert. What’s a special occasion without something for your sweet tooth?
This past Wednesday we returned to one of our favorite places. We had both been traveling and had not seen each other for several days. In celebration we followed the date night theory outlined above. Four (albeit small) margs, plenty of queso, a shared cheesy crisp and an order of bread pudding later, we were only out about $30. Not too bad really. We had a good time.
